Thanksgiving special: The Giving Tree

24th November 2020

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and the picture book brought to you by KnewSTEP is about this lovely holiday. The Giving Tree is a spectacular picture book by American author Shel Silverstein that was awarded “100 Greatest Books for Kids”. It is suitable for children ages 5-6. Let’s see what happens in the story!

The Giving Tree is about the relationship between a boy and a tree. Throughout the different life stages of the boy, the loving tree is a “giver” and provides the boy with what he needs. When the little boy becomes a teenager and hopes to earn money, the tree offers the apples on its branches to be sold. The teenager becomes a man and hopes to have a family, the tree offers its branches to build a house. The man wishes to travel far and explore the possibilities of the world, the tree offers its trunk to build a boat. It is the unconditional love that the tree offers, providing the boy with all it has got until only a tree stump is left. This leaves us pondering: is the tree happy or sad?

The author uses simple words and lined illustrations to move readers in this warm and slightly heartbreaking story. The vocabulary is straightforward and comprehensible. Children are encouraged to read along with parents to increase their confidence in speaking English.

I couldn’t help but think how the tree resembles our parents who nurtured us with all they have, and how we resemble the boy who takes the love for granted. Those who finish this book surely can resonate and cherish the love and bonding. Love is to “give”, rather than “take”. Love is providing, not over-spoiling. This is also an opportunity for parents to reflect the ways they show their love to their children, and teach children to always have a grateful heart. This is what Thanksgiving is all about!
