May’s picture book: Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do

4th May 2021

Labour Day is coming up soon. Aside from having a nice day of rest, how do we teach children the true meaning of labour? This picture book recommendation may be a simple introduction to independence, and teaching children to appreciate their parents’ efforts. Written by Eileen Christelow, Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do is a story suitable for children ages 3-9 and perfect for the Labor day weekend.

The story takes place during summer when five little monkeys suffer from boredom at home. Their mother encourages them to tidy the house, to get ready for Grandma Bessie’s visit. Well-meaning as ever, fun happens as the five little monkeys pick up the room, scrub the bathroom and beat the dirt out of rugs. It is lots of fun to act it out with your child to increase their impression of these vocabularies!

Each time they hit boredom when they complete a task, Mama monkey is always bound to find a new duty. She tells the little monkeys a secret: Grandma loves sweet fruit for dessert, so they set off to pick berries. In the end, they bring all the dust and dirt home and make the tidy house back into a mess. Wondering how the story ends? Find out by reading the picture book!

This series is well-loved by children because it’s relatable, with simple and catchy sentences. Wonderful for reading together with your children! Parents would definitely find it relatable that living with children means constantly cleaning after them. Teaching children to understand a tidy home does not come easy. Invite them to be part of keeping the home clean and learn to do household work, otherwise, they will be like the little monkeys — making a bigger mess than before.
