Easter Picture Book: Llama Llama Easter Egg

6th April 2021

Easter is a Christian holiday widely celebrated in Western Culture in honour of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. This year, Easter Sunday falls on April 4, the first Sunday after Vernal Equinox symbolizing rebirth and hope. Easter is often linked to adorable bunny rabbits and colourful eggs. As strong reproductive animals, rabbits represent the beauty of a new life. Once every year Easter eggs are hidden in the garden for children to hunt the surprises that the “Easter Bunny” leaves behind.

This week we introduce the Easter title Llama Llama Easter Egg by author Anna Dewdney. It’s a simple, captivating read for toddlers ages 2-4. Previously from the same series, Llama Llama Red Pajama was featured on our site. Click here to read.

On the cover, Llama Llama and his buddies are hunting for Easter eggs. Before reading the story we can introduce Easter and its origin to excite your toddler. On Easter morning the Easter Bunny brings Llama and his friends lots of treats to share. Chocolate bunnies, jelly beans and colourful eggs of all sizes in yellow, pink and green. In the end, a little bird hatches out of a blue egg, what a big surprise for little Llama!

This simple story is a wonderful way to introduce toddlers to western cultural holidays and new verbs such as hunt and crack. We encourage creative and imaginative post-storytime activities, like painting Easter eggs or DIY bunny costumes!

Last but not least, let’s talk about the different names of the rabbit family: rabbit, bunny and hare. In European countries, the festive rabbit is commonly referred to the Easter Bunny. Rabbits are more often domesticated, while the hare runs happily wild. As for bunny, it originally refers to a young girl. Nowadays it generally refers to a baby rabbit, or a girl dressing up as a rabbit “Bunny girl”.
