Cambridge Stories 01: About Cambridge Union
2nd October 2019
Stepping into October, University of Cambridge colleges have also begun their courses. KnewSTEP hopes to share with you all the unique stories about Cambridge. In the following weeks, we will post a series of stories about different places across Cambridge to give parents and students a better insight of Cambridge, and explore the reasons why for many years Cambridge has always remained a top world-class university.
This week we will introduce the Cambridge Union with you. Similar to universities around the world, University of Cambridge also has many student societies, but the largest must be the Cambridge Union. The Cambridge Union is a society that hosts debates and speeches delivered by world leaders and celebrities, such as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Theodore Roosevelt, US Senator Bernie Sanders and so on.
In addition to the famous presentations, the Cambridge Union is one of the oldest and most active debate society in the world with more than 70,000 life members worldwide. The Union also regularly organises different debates to allow students to express their opinions on various world issues. This provided Cambridge students with the opportunity to meet with and directly ask questions to key leaders from around the world, making it a centre forum for Cambridge students.
For example, next week, Microsoft founder Bill Gates will be speaking at the Cambridge Union, not to mention others such as whistleblower Edward Snowden and UN Secretary-General Ki-moon. As the famous British screenwriter Stephen Fry once commented, “At the heart of Cambridge is the power of the mind and the art implicit in it is to empower humankind. The aim of being here besides acquiring wisdoms is the ability to shape ideas and play gracefully with.” You may take a look at the following short film to get to know more the Union (source from The Cambridge Union): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eb8SNOnSYA
Did you know that the graduation ceremony of our annual summer project was for many years held in the Cambridge Union? Last year, we even invited Royal Etiquette Experts to give us British social etiquette workshop at the Cambridge Union for our students.
