//This week at KnewSTEP: Time to learn more about recycling! //

According to the UK Government Office for Science, around 70 percent of all the litter in the oceans is made of plastic. Plastic pollution is a global environmental major problem which can be harmful to wildlife, human well-being and to the global economy. Most of the plastic bags that we use nowadays degrade very slowly, meaning that they persist in the environment for centuries. The entanglement in, or ingestion of, plastics can cause injury and death to a wide range of marine organisms. In addition, there are emerging concerns of potential negative consequences for human well-being.

One way to tackle with plastic pollution is through plastics recycling. Not only does it conserve energy and protect the environment, but recycled plastics can also be put to innovative use. However, the current global plastic recycling rate is just about 10%, which leaves a huge room for improvement. The low recycling rate is partly due to the lack of awareness for separating recyclable plastic items from other wastes (including those non-recyclable plastic materials).

In light of the above, with the support of the Cambridge City Council and the charity RECycling of Used Plastics Limited (RECOUP), KnewSTEP Education is honoured to organise a volunteering event to raise plastic recycling awareness in Cambridge later this month. RECOUP is the UK’s leading authority on plastics waste and resource management, the charity also works with many other leading international plastics recycling organisations to ensure that it stimulates the implementation of latest best practices and developments world-wide. This meaningful collaborative event will offer our students from this year’s summer programme a great opportunity for to learn more about plastic recycling use and process from experts in this field.
