Professor Liu from the University of Macau has shared the application of STEAM in early childhood education. Dr Liu encouraged teachers to praise children more in order to boost their development in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The praising methods can cultivate children’s whole-person development and enhance their global competitiveness. Professor Liu has also reminded the audience that every child has unlimited potentials and creativity, and free discovery and exploration are the only essentials for a child truly need.

Dr. Zhang, from Beijing Edbridge Education, shared the application of observation methods in early childhood education. Through the observation of understanding children’s developmental characteristics and individual differences, teachers can then support the children’s growth. This can also help promote the growth of teachers, and aid teachers with improving their teaching quality. It would also promote the communication between teachers and parents, and establish a consensus between parenting at home and the formal education in school. Teachers can also learn through observing and recording children’ daily life, where they can systematically obtain continuous changes in children’s physical and mental development, and interfere when necessary.

In addition, Dr. Winnie Pui from the University of Cambridge has also encouraged panel teachers to guide other teachers to carry out curriculum reform in the kindergarten, so that teachers can try to apply the “Early-years Whole-person Global-mindset Curriculum Framework (EWGC)” into their teaching curriculum. With the addition of EWGC, the teaching quality of the whole kindergarten is hoped to be improved through Exploration, Practice and Reflection. Dr. Pui also guided teachers how to use different assessment tools to improve their self-reflection.

EWGC was tailored to different age groups and stages, allowing teachers to work closely together to plan effective teaching methods. Through a variety of indoor and outdoor learning settings and different cognitive and sensory learning, the children are hoped to find their motivation to engage in learning, which is tailored to suit individual child’s personal needs.

KnewSTEP Education hopes to continue to work with Qinghua kindergarten to promote children’s learning and development in various fields through teaching and playing, and create personalised and whole-person learning experience for the children. Dr. Pui also mentioned that teachers’ teaching plan could be broader and diversified, so that children can grow to be more culturally integrated, while at the same time still develop a deep understanding of their own culture and a sense of respect to their own heritage. In this way, children will effectively develop their global mindset and develop holistically.
