Do you have a fixed or growth mindset?
9th June 2020
When faced with the same problem, everyone looks at it from different perspectives and takes different actions afterwards, and hence the results will be completely different. This week, we will discuss the different kind of influence that a fixed mindset and a growth mindset will bring to us respectively?
According to Dr Carol Dweck, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, the two major mindsets are: fixed mindset and growth mindset. Children who have a growth mindset are more likely to accept challenges and face obstacles with confidence. They also believe that they have the ability to develop their potentials and solve problems accordingly. However, children with a fixed mindset are less likely to enjoy their learning process as they tend to set their eyes on the learning outcome only, and whether it results in success and failure makes a big deal to them.
Growth Mindset VS Fixed Mindset
Therefore, it can be seen that children with a growth mindset in general have higher resilience and problem-solving skills. Why don’t we take a moment to have a look at the following prompt cards, to see how one may help our children develop a growth mindset and enjoy their learning?
Instead of saying, “I’ll never be smart”
It can be said: “I will learn how to do it”
Instead of saying, “I made a mistake”
It can be said: “mistakes can make me learn”
Instead of saying, “my friend can do it”
It can be said: “I can learn from them“
Instead of saying, “I’m not very good at it”
It can be said: “what else can I do to accomplish this”
May your child have a prosperous “growth”
Let us build this growth mindset together. At KnewSTEP Education, we always encourage our students to think, to observe, to raise questions, and to enjoy. In fact, one’s fixed mindset can be changed, or in other words, the growth mindset can be cultivated. Therefore, we as parents and educators can also communicate with our children with a growth mindset, while not only support our children’s growth, but also empower our children to believe that they too, possess the power to be better!
