Classic Picture Books Recommendation I for Ages 5-6
20th October 2020
Picture books on life skills development and emotional literacy are of our particular interest, and both topics are wonderful for reading with children. A good picture book story can reflect a child’s inner world and behavior habits. Children can see parts of themselves in the story, and parents can understand their children better.
During this stage of the language enlightenment, picture books can help stimulate children’s interest in English learning. This week we are introducing two picture books that children aged 5-6 will find relatable, hilarious and captivating!
Maurice Sendak is a renowned author and illustrator of children’s books. This picture book has been adapted into the movie “Beast Adventure Park” and won various awards, including the Catic Gold Award and the International Andersen Illustration Award. All children are adventurous, imaginative and mischievous. In this story Max fantasizes about being a beast in the jungle. His shenanigans at home pulls his mother’s last string, resulting in no supper as a punishment. Locked in his bedroom, Max is oblivious of his wrongdoing, and continues to fantasize in his small world: he came to a country of beasts by boat, he conquered the beasts there, became the king of beasts, and experienced all kinds of adventures in the jungle. Eventually, his hunger and loneliness bring him back to reality. Max returns, and finds the food on the table, still warm and toasty.
This story genuinely describes a child overcoming negative emotions and is a wonderful child psychology read for parents. If you observe carefully, the size of the pictures are constantly changing, and the illustrations are from Max’s eye view. It is through this change in the size of the pictures that the artist allows us to “see” through Max’s perspective, and “feel” the psychological process dealing with his inner conflict. As fascinating as the outer world is, children always long to return home after their “adventures”.
These story was written lively with vibrant illustrations. Children can relate to the protagonists’ mischiefs, emotions and troubles, and together grow with the children in the story. Through reading English picture books, our young readers can build up their English language systematically, little by little. They will remember how words and phrases are used in context, and gradually accumulate their language sense. This is greatly beneficial to their acquisition of English language!
