Cambridge Stories 05: About Equestrian Etiquette

12th November 2019

This week KnewSTEP Education will continue to share different Cambridge stories with you. Do you know our students who attended the summer programme last year were fascinated by the equestrian experience in Cambridge? Some people think that equestrian, together with golf and tennis, are the top three “noble sports” in the UK, what do you think?

Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II started practising horse riding from a very young age? Even now there are still many of the Queen’s beloved ‘horses’ in the royal stable. Do you know what kind of riding clothes should horse riders wear when competing in an equestrian event in the UK? How much do you know about the etiquette of horse-riding? How do beginners communicate with horses and train them? Last year in our summer programme students gained valuable knowledge in their horse riding taster course in Cambridge.

KnewSTEP Equestrian courses are specially arranged at a riding school that is located in the north of Cambridge. The professional horse-riding school provides different levels of riding assistants and a variety of horses for the riding services. The professional equestrian instructors will then personally select the corresponding horses for the courses, teach the students the horse-training techniques, etiquette and culture of equestrianism, and guide the students to practice riding on the horsebacks, as well as how to groom and take care of the horses afterwards. During the horse-riding practice, students can learn to control their own emotions, learn to be calm and cultivate their sense of responsibility. Through placing oneself in others’ shoes and thinking from the perspectives of the horses, the students can then learn to understand how treat others with respect and empathy.

The etiquette of equestrianism lies in the cultivation of good virtues, it also offers the chance of being out in the nature and let the breeze calm our mind. Perhaps that is the reason why British royal family and nobles love the horse-riding sport so dearly. There is also an old saying that “a person who rides a horse may not necessarily be a noble, but a noble certainly know how to ride a horse”. Perhaps we don’t need to be a noble to ride a horse, but we certainly can understand more about the British culture through the experience of horse-riding.
