Classic Picture Books Recommendation for Ages 4-5

8th September 2020

The best period to begin a child’s reading journey through picture books is during ages 3-6. Children will gradually understand the story plot and development, with the vocabulary learnt during ages 0-3, this is a perfect time to learn basic grammar and sentence structures. Let’s take a look at the picture books we picked for children ages 4-5.

1. Dogger

British author Shirley Hughes won the Kate Greenaway medal with this picture book. Dogger is a story about two siblings. Little Dave lost his beloved stuffed dog at school. Later at the school bazaar, the stuffed dog was auctioned and bought by a little girl. Dave’s older sister earns the stuffed dog back by trading the little girl her teddy bear. This heart-warming tale of loss and found will bring back those memories, especially of a favourite toy.

2. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish

Dr. Seuss is the winner of the Catic Award, the highest honour for American picture books, and one of the most critically acclaimed children’s literature writers in the twentieth century. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish has a number of short story-poems at various lengths, allowing children to fully immerse in fun of reading independently. The story explores from land to sea, and everywhere in your imagination. It’s rhyming, catchy and fun to read, with plenty of vocabulary and antonyms. Dr. Seuss has an original sense of humour, and there are a profound storyline and interesting boy and girl character throughout the book – you will feel like you are part of the story!

The story ends with “Good night, it’s time to sleep”. It’s a great ending to let children know it is bedtime for them as well. We can also use Dr. Seuss’s phases in everyday life, such as Sleep with my mother, sleep with my bear.
