Learning Time with Timmy – British Council Online Learning Resources

24th March 2020

Nowadays, many students are using their electronic device to attend various online lessons at home due to the COVID-19 situation. In addition to the online lessons, there are a bunch of online resources on the Internet for home education purposes as well. Among all these choices on the Internet, how should we choose properly for our children? As parents, how can we accompany our children effectively to make use of these e-learning resources? This week we will be recommending you an English learning app for young children aged 3 to 6 launched by the British Council. Let us demonstrate how to use “Learning Time with Timmy” to learn English at home.

“Learning time with Timmy” is designed by the teaching experts British Council. They have collaborated with the TV programme “Timmy Time” with the main character – Timmy the sheep and his friends. Together, they have launched three series of English learning resources that are suitable for young children aged 3 to 6 years old. For English-speaking children, the app is suitable for preschool children aged 2 years old or above. The app includes three levels of difficulty: 1) Timmy 1: First Words in English, 2) Timmy 2: New Skills, and 3) Timmy 3: Starting to read. Parents can guide their children step by step on each level of difficulty.

Children can learn a variety of English vocabulary by playing challenging interactive games with Timmy. For example, at the very beginning, a single word will appear on the screen, such as “pear” and “pencil”, it will then gradually evolve into a phrase with more parts of speech, such as “three pink belts”. In addition to English, the narrator also introduces counting exercises, which will help children to improve their English skills based on the context, as well as practising their everyday real-life knowledge and basic maths skills. There are other exercises for children such as classifying items by their type and colour, or finding hidden items where children can learn other new vocabularies for example. To develop children’s thinking ability, Timmy and his friends also encourage and support children to make choices in the interactive games, and reward children with stickers or short videos after children have completed certain levels.

What’s the difference between Timmy 1-3 series?

  • Timmy 1 has three interactive games, including up to 60 English words of colour, number, shape, healthy food, animal, common objects and toys, to enhance children’s interests in language learning and memory training.
  • Timmy 2 has three interactive games, including up to 60 English words of nature, art, bathing, sports and furniture, to improve children’s reading skills, hand-eye coordination and concentration.
  • Timmy 3 has three interactive games, including up to 60 English words and phrases of party food, beach, camping, music, clothes and props, body parts, to build children’s confidence of reading and learning new vocabularies, as well as improving other key learning capabilities.

Certainly, each new series will also contain new words, and review the vocabularies from the previous stage, so that the children can recycle the knowledge while acquiring new ones.

We hope that through various learning resources and application games on the Internet, parents can also make good use of resources. In doing so, we hope all children can make the most of their time studying at home, and at the same time improving their development of communication skills, imagination, and creativity.

We believe that as long as we can have a good control of time management and appropriate amount of use of electronic device and online resources, learning can be fun, engaging and rewarding as well. Through this difficult time, KnewSTEP will continue to stand with you and study with you. Our education consultant team has also collected a variety of learning resources for early years to secondary students’ home learning earlier, parents can go to the following page to download some worksheet to accompany their children’s study at home.
