Cambridge Stories 07: About the Importance of Sports in Education
5th December 2019
Many people wonder whether practising sports has a direct influence in education. Some even doubt whether a child will not perform as well academically when they spend too much time doing sports. In fact, the University of Cambridge Sports Service launched a report name “the Sport and Academic Performance Report” in 2019 that indicated “undergraduate students who participated in University-level sport performed just as well academically, if not better, than the undergraduate population as a whole”.
The key findings of the research suggested that the percentage of first-class results achieved by undergraduate sportspeople (28.4%) was greater than the percentage achieved by undergraduates in the University as a whole (23.7%). In addition, the percentage of lower second- and third-class results achieved by undergraduate sportspeople was lower than undergraduates in the University as a whole.
The report also interviewed a number of recent graduated sportspeople. Their testimonials showed that sport and physical activity can provide an effective release from academic studies, improve mental health and give students the opportunity to develop valuable social and support networks. In addition, Sports can also help students to develop valuable transferable skills such as time-management, focus, the ability to perform under pressure, leadership and communication.
KnewSTEP also placed importance on sports activities and British sports experience in our summer programme. For example, we have always built in a Golf course for our students coming to Cambridge. The course is instructed by Mr James Burton, who is a professional golf expert of European Golf Teachers’ Union. Throughout the year, there are also regular competitions, matches, and local school group lessons being held at Mr Burton’s golf school. Apart from golf courses, our students will also participate in basketball and badminton with our activity leaders, in which the students can experience the whole person education experience just like a British student.
