Cambridge Stories 06: About 3D Printing Workshop at Cambridge Laboratory

28th November 2019

This week KnewSTEP Education will continue to share different Cambridge stories with you. Did you know that students from last year’s summer project took a course in 3D printing and laser-cutting technology in Cambridge? The interesting and innovative course has also become one of the students’ favourites. What do you know about 3D printing?

It turns out that 3D printing technology in the UK is also very popular and valued. According to a source from the Economist, 3D printing was marked as one of the key symbols of the Digital Revolution era. It is an emerging technology that is rapidly evolving in all areas of the modern world, which simplifies production processes, shortens construction time, increases efficiency and reduces costs. 3D printing technology refers to the application of computer software to design and process a three-dimensional product through a specific model equipment (so called “3D printer”). What do you know about the real-life application of 3D technology? How should one start and implement the actual use of 3D printing? Although 3D printing sounds to be hard to reach, students from last year’s summer project have already experienced the powerful technology in one of the laboratories in Cambridge.

The 3D workshop was held at one of the spacious laboratories in Cambridge, which provides students the authentic experience of being a young scientist under the quality instruction by a Cambridge professional scientist The course includes 3D printing and 3D laser cutting technology, for example in the experiment of rapid prototyping workshop, students learnt the design process of 3D design and laser cutting and even went home with a keyring with their individual name on as a souvenir of their trip to the Cambridge laboratory.

With the introduction of 3D printing technology, we hope to effectively cultivate students’ practicality and thinking ability, so as to improve the interaction quality teachers and students, as well as encourage students to enjoy the fun of learning. We also hope to promote the concept of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) through the 3D printing workshop, in which we may develop students’ all-rounded skills and encourage students explore their intellectual curiosity through the process of problem solving and decision making. Through which, students can then boost their logical thinking and stimulate their unlimited imagination and creativity.
