Study Aboard in Cambridge: What’s special about boarding school life?
29th October 2019
Recently, more and more students have travelled overseas to study abroad, including countries such as Australia, New Zealand, or further continents such as the US, Canada and the UK. Ever wonder why studying abroad become such a popular option for students? Let us share a few unique features of boarding school life with you today.
1. Cultivating Independence
Studying abroad means that students will have to leave their comfort zone to take care of themselves and learn to be independent. Children nowadays are quite fortunate that they do not need to work for their living and are still quite dependent on their families. Some may even consider students nowadays are quite ‘spoiled’ due to their lack of ability to self-sustain. When one studies abroad, one must learn to live independently without the instant help provided by their parents.
Inside boarding schools, there is always a very strict timetable where students have to study, rest and explore their interests at a specific time. There won’t be any domestic helper to help you do your housework and therefore students will have to learn life skills such as doing their own laundry and making their bed. These life skills could help them adapt to the society more easily. Certainly, these responsibilities will increase and differ according to their age, allowing students to acquire the skills more gradually.
2. Increasing Cultural Awareness and developing a global mindset
Students at the boarding schools come from all over the world, creating an international and diverse community, which help prepare students to enter the society more smoothly. During their boarding school life, students can share and exchange different cultures and languages with their peers from other countries. These could help students immerse with one another and widen their global perspectives. In addition, they will also be able to build international society peacefully when they go out, breaking through the cultural differences and stereotypes.
3. Learning more about oneself
Boarders spent much more time at school than Day Students. There will be more time and space for boarders to explore their interests and learn soft skills that are important to a child’s development. Students will have lots of extra-curricular activities after school, from sports to music, allowing students to develop and understand oneself. In addition to that, student will have more life-related activities, such as cooking with boarders, going out for formal dinner and have a visit etc. Teachers are walking with students through all these, guiding them to grow and know more about themselves during this Boarding period.
I would like to finish with a quote by Mr Tom Rogerson – the Headmaster of Cottesmore Prep School,
“Boarding school education builds character, increases resilience in a controlled, caring environment and prepares you for the inevitable knocks, scrapes, twists and turns of life.”
Boarding School builds a Home away from Home.
